Lanzarote Diving
Lanzarote offers some of the best diving in the Northern Hemisphere.
With over 500 species of fish, many wrecks, underwater volcanic caves, good visibility (10 - 30 meters) and water temperatures ranging from 18 to 23 degrees, it is easy to see why.
Many of the popular dive sites are easily accessible with both shore and boat diving possible.
Highlights of Diving in Lanzarote include:
· Fish
Close encounters with grouper, barracuda, angelshark, and rays. It is also possible to see Hammerhead Sharks off the small island of Los Lobos (located between Lanzarote and neighbouring Fuerteventura).
· Caves
There are many underwater caves such as the 'Cathedral'.
· Wrecks
There are many old wrecks located around the coast of Lanzarote as well as a specially created Marine Park (created by sinking several boats) just off the coast at Puerto del Carmen.
· Reefs
The reefs around Lanzarote are teeming with marine life such as Octopus, Anenome, Cuttlefish, Sea Horses Red Coral.

Lanzarote Windsurfing
Lanzarote, with its natural beauty and ideal weather conditions, is a perfect setting for lovers of windsurfing.
The coasts of clear waters, fine sands and the presence of the trade winds make Lanzarote the perfect windsurfing location for both pleasure seekers and professionals alike. Such is its perfection that it has been the training ground for many champions.
Lanzarote also has an excellent tourist infrastructure with many well-organised training schools, thus adding to its popularity as a wind surfing destination.
Popular windsurfing areas
Costa Teguise is extremely popular as the wind really picks up in the afternoon.
Mornings are good for beginners with long boards and afternoons for short boarders. Jetties shelter the beach but once you get outside there is a shallow reef, which makes for a good swell and a nice break. It is the best-known spot in Lanzarote.
The Passat is blocked in most places by buildings but can get strong at times.
At the beach of Las Cucharas the wind blows the hardest. Due to the flat water conditions and strong and steady winds further out, this is the place for freestylers. If you want to train on your wave riding, the northern and eastern parts of the bay are perfect during the upcoming tide. About 300 meters out from the point there is a wave break that can get high on certain days. Directly at the point there is a smaller one. Normally the waves are far apart and break in such a manner that a wave rider trainee can handle them with ease.
Due to the diversity of conditions and guaranteed wind even the inexperienced windsurfer can have a great time here.
If you want really good waves head for Jameos del Agua in the northeast of the island or Famara on the west coast. A great place for wave riders, Jameos del Agua is without doubt one of the toughest surf spots in lanzarote and is really for the technically proficient. The waves break in multiple sections over the volcanic reef. To reach a take off site, you'll have to cross rough volcanic terrain, so be advised to wear suitable footwear. Finally, watch out for the shore break, and when the tide heads out, the waves and currents can get pretty hectic.
For these reasons the spot is recommended for experienced wind surfers only.
La Santa on the west coast offers a sheltered lagoon for beginners.
Matagorda, just north of Puerto del Carmen also has favourable conditions providing flat water with "bump and jump" conditions.
Lanzarote Sailing
The Canary Islands, because of the trade winds, were the historic stopover point for transatlantic voyages – Columbus himself stopped off in The Canary Islands on his way to discovering America.
Today, many sailors stop off in Puerto Calero in Lanzarote while taking the trip of a lifetime to South America or around the World. The waters around the island offer excellent sailing conditions with plenty to see: Flying Fish, Turtles, Dolphins and Whales as well as the offshore Islands of La Graciosa (straight out of a Pirate Novel), Alegranza, Montana Clara and Isla Lobos.
Even if you have no sailing experience, you can get a taste of what it's all about (and a little luxury too) by chartering a Yacht or taking a Catamaran excursion.
